life at snc!

My First Semester of College

Hello family and friends!

Wow! It feels just yesterday that I was moving into college and  that I had my first day of classes. But wow, here I sit a semester of college wiser, and I am writing to reflect all that I’ve learned.

1.It’s okay to have fun

While the primary purpose of college is to learn, I can’t be studying 24/7. This rule is applicable to all levels of school, working adults, and everyone in between. In order to keep one’s sanity, one must have some recreation. Whether that be reading a book for fun, shredding the ukulele, or going for a walk. Everyone deserves a break, and it’s okay to take breaks.

2. Power naps are awesome

My life has been transformed. I can’t remember a life in which I napped for hours. My friends, I am letting you in on a secret. Fifteen naps solve everything. Feeling that afternoon slump? Fifteen-minute nap. Wanna take a break? Fifteen-minute nap. It solves every problem, I swear.

3. The future

While I am fairly certain that I want to go into the field of education, I’m not sure what I want to do after college. Do I want to teach for a couple of years, or do I want get a Ph.D as soon as possible? While this question haunts me, I know that it’ll all work out in the end. I’m only a freshman right now and it’s okay to not know what you wanna do for the rest of your life.

4. Going home

While college is about learning to live on your own away from your parents, it’s okay to go home. I would go home most weekends, but I still had the “college experience”. I’m free to make my own choices, but I still love my family. Going home every weekend felt like a vacation from school which is what I really needed some weeks.

5. Friends

To all of my buddies, thank you for being you. I’ve learned that friendship should be full of laughter, smiles, and honesty. They build you up when you’re down and are kind. They have deep discussions about life and share in the stress of school. But ultimately, friends care for one another. Thank you guys for being a light in the stressful times of college, and making me smile big smiles. 🙂

6. Phone Calls

A big thanks for my family. Sometimes when the stress would get too much, I would dial up my home phone number and hear my voices in this entire world. Sometimes all it would take it ten minutes for me to get back up and finish the darn homework. Thanks family for lending a listening ear when my brain couldn’t handle it anymore.

7. Squirrels

If you ever happen to find yourself at SNC, you undoubtedly will run across a crazy squirrel. The squirrels here are crazy! There have been many times where a squirrel is in a tree yelling at me. It’s weird. But also it’s cute when you see a chunky little squirrel munching on something.

8. Syllabus

Alrighty, one time I thought that there was nothing due for class, but I was mistaken. Apparently, we had to read 100 pages of a book. I did not even open the book. And, there was a quiz that day on the reading that we were supposed to do. I was the only one who didn’t read the book OR the syllabus. Golly, I learned to always check the syllabus because there’s always an assignment due.

9. I’m a nerd

You’ll NEVER find me at a party sipping on illegal beverages. That’s just not who I am. I prefer to spend my saturday nights for activities that I enjoy that I can’t usually do during the week. Like watching America’s Next Top Model (does anyone else watch this??), playing my uke, reading some books, or chilling with family and friends. It’s not that I don’t want to have fun, because I think that playing card games are infinitely more fun than a party could ever be. It’s just that isn’t how I want to spend my time, and that’s okay.

10. Stickers

One thing that I learned real quick was that stickers are great to accessorize laptop cases or water bottles. I love looking at other people’s stickers because it shows you who they are. Through some stickers, I can better understand someone without talking to them. Stickers are awesome so go buy some.

11. Life’s what you make it

Hannah Montana was right when she wrote that lyric (click the link above to listen to Hannah’s supreme awesomeness). Anyways, I mean it’s crazy to think how much anyone’s life could change with one decision. I remember reading somewhere that you are one decision away from changing your life. I feel like that especially rings true for college students. A switch of a major can change the course of one’s life. If someone ever feels stuck, there’s always something that can be done about it.

This list could go on and on but this is where I’ll end it.

Thanks for reading! (And you can subscribe below so that you can read all my weird blogs)
